Industrial placements

student on industrial placement

All of our courses provide students with the opportunity to undertake a year-long period of professional development in industry. The industrial placement year can be taken after either the second or third year of study at university.

We see industrial placements as an extension of the process of formation of professional engineers and our industrial collaborators play a crucial role in achieving this objective. The skills and knowledge our students acquire whilst in industry enriches their experience of education when they return to university.

In addition, the advantage of having had relevant industrial experience is inestimable when it comes to looking for a career on graduation. Typically our placement students are paid a salary of around £17,000 per annum. On completion of the year in industry, you will be awarded an additional qualification which we call the Diploma in Industrial Studies or “DIS.”

Finding a placement

We have unrivalled links with over 200 external companies due to the fact we have been placing our students in industry for the last 60 years. Our students are keenly sought after by companies in the process industries who know from past experience that Loughborough students are versatile and well prepared to take on a variety of tasks.

The Department has a dedicated Professional Development Tutor who gathers and supplies information about training opportunities, arranges interview visits in the Department and acts as an intermediary between students and companies. The Department makes every effort to help secure placements that match the interests and ambitions of our students.

Application forms and other information for students wanting to undertake a Placement DIS year are available on the School of AACME, LEARN Industrial Placements page (yyAACME05 School of AACME Industrial Placements Page, where yy is the current academic year).

Supporting you on placement

During the placement period, regular contact is maintained with the Department. Students inform their tutors of the nature of their work and general progress through monthly reports. Tutors also visit students at their workplace at least twice a year.
