Sir Robert Martin University Prize and Faculty Prizes

Nominations are invited for the Sir Robert Martin University Prize. This award is the premier award of the University. The Prize consists of an award of £1,500 plus a commemorative medal and may be awarded annually to an outstanding student of the University for a combination of both academic and non-academic achievement.

In addition the the Sir Robert Martin University Prize, four Sir Robert Martin Faculty Prizes, (one in Engineering, one in Science and two in Social Sciences and Humanities) to the value of £500 each, may be awarded annually to an outstanding student in the Faculty for both academic and non-academic achievement, but not to the Sir Robert Martin University Prizewinner.

Robert Martin was a member of a distinguished and a very long-established Leicestershire family. He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, where he read Mechanical Engineering. After working as a railway engineer, he enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment in the First World War. Eventually wounded and invalided out, he was awarded the Companionship of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for wartime leadership and gallantry.

In 1924 he was elected Chairman of Leicestershire Council, a post he held until 1960. He was also Chairman of the County Education Committee and it was in this capacity that he made a major contribution to the development of Loughborough College, the predecessor to the University. Elected to its governing body in 1922 and its chairman from 1940 to 1960, he together with Sir William Brockington, the long-serving County Director of Education, and Dr Herbert Schofield, the college principal, formed 'the triumvirate' which fostered the remarkable growth of the college.

In 1939 he was knighted for his services to local government and education; in 1958 he attended the christening of Martin Hall, named after him, on the campus; and in 1959 he was awarded a Doctorate of Law by Leicester University. He died in 1961 at the age of 86.

Hannah Community Prize

A prize or prizes to the total value of £200 may be awarded to students of Loughborough University in recognition of acts of kindness or good neighbourliness in the community. The prize(s) may be awarded to an individual student, specific groups of students or student households. 

To nominate a student, groups of students or a student household please use the Nomination Form.

If nominating a student/s for both the Hannah Community Prize and the T S Shipman Prize, please complete separate forms for each nomination.

Individuals who are primarily and originally registered as students of the University may be considered for the prizes. However individuals who are primarily and originally employed by the University will normally be excluded from consideration due to the nature of the prize. Also due to the nature of this award, it is the usual procedure to make nominations without the student(s) knowledge.

The Hannah Community Prize is awarded using funds originally bequeathed to the University in memory of Mr George Alexander Hannah, a student who attended Loughborough University during his retirement.

Loughborough Experience Award

The Loughborough Experience Award was set up in 2005 by the executive of the Students' Union who wished to recognise, and reward the students who put a lot of effort into life at Loughborough. It was felt that the atmosphere around Loughborough, created by the most active students, is a contributing factor in making Loughborough one of the best Universities to come to. The Experience Awards look to give something back to the students who give a lot during their time here.

The panel receives nominations from a wide range of people connected with Loughborough, be they sabbatical officers, hall chairs, hall wardens, academics, or regular students. These nominations are brought together and each one is discussed for their individual merits. The panel looks for selflessness, attitude, impact of the nominees activities, and variation in activities. There will be between 7 and 12 winners decided, all of which will receive a prize and their name in the degree programme. Out of those winners, an overall winner shall be decided who has contributed the most, and made the most impact. They shall be awarded the Sir David Wallace Trophy for extreme achievement.

 

Loughborough University Development Trust Prizes

Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd and Final year undergraduate students.

This prize is funded through the The Development Trust. The Trust exists to support the University in giving students an outstanding quality of educational experience. It raises funds from former students and other friends of the University. Their generosity has made this prize possible.

Prizes are awarded on a departmental basis, please check departmental prizes webpage for more information.

 

Loughborough University Graduate School Prizes

Students must be nominated for this award by their department

A prize consisting of an award of £400 plus a certificate may be awarded to a student in each of the three faculties registered on an MA, MDes, MRes or MSc programme or the first or second year of an EngD programme in 2010/11, for outstanding all round achievement.  

This prize is funded through the Development Trust. The Trust exists to support the University in giving students an outstanding quality of educational experience. It raises funds from former students and other friends of the University. Their generosity has made this prize possible.

Graduate School Research Prizes

Nominations are invited for the Graduate School Research Student Prizes. Students from all Schools are eligible for nomination for the two prizes, each to the value of £600, which may be awarded to full-time or part-time postgraduate research students who have progressed beyond the first year of their research student registration, for outstanding academic performance and academic achievement.

Nominations should be made by a student's research supervisor only using the standard nomination form. As much information as possible should be provided.

Mavis Stone Prize for Music

A prize to the value of £200, to be awarded annually to a student who has been receiving music tuition under the auspices of the university for more than one year, and who is judged to have achieved the greatest improvement in their music. The recipient will be selected by music tutors being invited to nominate, in writing, one person who in his or her view has achieved the greatest improvement. A small group co-ordinated by The Arts Centre Executive Officer would consider all nominations and choose a winner.

This prize was donated by members of the family of Mavis C Stone, who died in October 2003. It was donated in recognition of her lifelong love of music, and the enjoyment she gained from her involvement with students and all young people.

 

T S Shipman Prizes

A prize or prizes to the total value of £800 may be awarded to students of the University or Colleges who are considered to have contributed most to the development of co-operation and aid between the University or Colleges and the local community.

Individuals who are primarily and originally registered as students of the University may be considered for the prizes. However individuals who are primarily and originally employed by the University will normally be excluded from consideration due to the nature of the prize.

This prize comes from a prize fund presented to the University by the T S Shipman Trust, established by Mr T S Shipman, joint Managing Director of A A Jones and Shipman, Leicester. A A Jones and Shipman were one of the largest machine tool manufacturers in Britain in the 1960s.

Mature Student Achievement Prizes

Prizes, each to the value of £500, to be awarded to the first-year UK undergraduate mature student in each faculty who achieves the highest overall Part A mark.

These awards aim to encourage and support mature student achievement, and to celebrate the success of mature students at Loughborough. In this context, mature students are deemed to be students who were 21 or over on first entry into the University. The winners will be selected at the end of the academic year using records of academic performance in Part A, and the prizes will be presented at the beginning of the following academic year. In the event of a tie, a breakdown of performance will be obtained from relevant departments. Students studying on the Science and Engineering Foundation programme will not be eligible for consideration

 

Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Internationalisation

A prize or prizes to the total value of £500 to be awarded annually to an individual or group from the student body at Loughborough University who, in the view of the assessor panel, has shown the greatest sustained contribution and dedication to developing internationalisation of the University during the five years preceding the closing date for nominations. Students whose work has been undertaken solely as part of their programme of study, however, are not eligible for this award.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Internationalisation has been established with the intention of encouraging and recognising exceptional service and contribution to internationalisation at Loughborough University.

Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability and the BEST Awards

The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability and the BEST (Building Environmental Sustainability Together) awards recognise exceptional service and contribution to campus sustainability, environmental awareness and environmental leadership. The awards are made annually to individuals or teams of registered students or staff at Loughborough University or Loughborough Students’ Union and to a University contractor or supplier. In exceptional circumstances the Vice-Chancellor’s Award may be awarded to an individual outside the University who has made a significant contribution to sustainability at the University.

A prize of £500 will be awarded to the winner of the Vice-Chancellor’s Award. A prize of £300 will be awarded to the winner of the BEST Research & Enterprise Award (based on a poster competition). All other award winners will receive certificates.
