First Year Prizes

Loughborough University Development Trust Prizes

A prize to the value of £50, to be awarded annually to a 1st year student who the department judges to have done one or more of the following:

Made good academic progress during the year.
Made an outstanding contribution to the sporting culture of the University.
Overcome significant difficulties, either academic or personal, to complete the year of study.
Made an invaluable contribution to the School and/or University in extra-curricular activity, this might be charity work, taking an active part in School Committee(s), assistance with open days and other recruitment activities.

This prize is funded through the The Development Trust. The Trust exists to support the University in giving students an outstanding quality of educational experience. It raises funds from former students and other friends of the University. Their generosity has made this prize possible.

Second Year Prizes

Loughborough University Development Trust Prizes

A prize to the value of £75, to be awarded annually to a 2nd year student who the department judges to have done one or more of the following:

Made good academic progress during the year.
Made an outstanding contribution to the sporting culture of the University.
Overcome significant difficulties, either academic or personal, to complete the year of study.
Made an invaluable contribution to the School and/or University in extra-curricular activity, this might be charity work, taking an active part in School Committee(s), assistance with open days and other recruitment activities.

Final Year Prizes

Alan Guy Prize

A plaque and a framed photograph to be awarded annually to the final-year student who has performed best in the physical education and pedagogy modules in the view of the Programme Board.

Alan Guy was a senior member of the School (previously named the Department of Physical Education, Sports Science & Recreation Management) first in the College of Education and later in the University. He died suddenly at work in January 1988. He had been at Loughborough for twenty-one years. Alan Guy made a major national contribution to the establishment of degree programmes in Physical Education and Sports Science and to the development of the Physical Education profession through his work on the preparation of teachers and his contribution to national and international committees. He was a past chairman of the British Universities Physical Education Association.

Dr Nick Norgan Memorial Human Biology Project Prize

A prize to the value of £50, to be awarded to the final-year student on the BSc Human Biology programme with the highest dissertation grade. If more than one student receives the highest dissertation grade, the prize will be shared.

Dr. Norgan was reader in Human Biology in the Department of Human Sciences until his death. This prize recognizes outstanding performance by a Human Biology student on their third year dissertation. Dr. Norgan enjoyed supervising many cohorts of Human Biology students through their dissertations and the prize awards skills that Dr. Norgan enjoyed fostering in such students.

Head of School Undergraduate Prize

A plaque and a framed photograph to be awarded to the final-year student for the best performance on an undergraduate programme in the view of the programme boards.

Human Biology Prize for Academic Excellence

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the final year of the Human Biology undergraduate programme.

G V Sibley Memorial Prize

A plaque and a framed photograph to be awarded to the best final-year student on the BSc Sport and Exercise Science programme as judged by the Programme Board.

Psychology Prize for Academic Excellence

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the final year of the Psychology undergraduate programme.

Postgraduate Prizes

Gatorade Sports Science Institute Award

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually to the student with the highest marks on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition module (PEP601).

GlaxoSmithKline Prize

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually to the student with the best combined mark on the MSc Sport and Exercise Nutrition programme.

Head of School Postgraduate Prize for Academic Excellence

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in a Masters Programme.

Sue Glyptis Award

A prize to the value of £100, to be awarded annually to the best research profile in MSc Recreation Management.

Professor Sue Glyptis (1953-1997) was the University's first female professor and first Professor of Recreation Management. She died tragically early at the age of 44, but left a legacy of a thriving teaching and research community in this field in the University.

Yakult Prize

A prize to the value of £250 to be awarded to the student on the MSc Exercise Physiology programme who attains the highest overall mark.
