Our MSc Industrial Mathematical Modelling will equip you with the skills and techniques required by industrial mathematics, including the real world problem-solving abilities in applied mathematics that are highly sought after within industry and commerce.

Industrial mathematics is a branch of applied mathematics that focuses on modelling, simulating and solving problems of relevance to industry.

Mathematical modelling is a valuable skill for solving the real problems and challenges faced by companies and provides a useful language to describe, solve and validate the problem. As such, our industrial mathematics master's is especially suitable if you have undertaken a three-year bachelor's degree in mathematics, science or engineering and wish to apply your enhanced skills in an industrial context. The programme also also provides excellent preparation for PhD study.

Our master's degree in industrial mathematics modelling enables you to explore mathematical models of real-world processes and their formulation, with a strong emphasis on how these techniques can be applied in industry, culminating in a 12-week summer project which is usually carried out within a local business. Your project is supported by our well-established links to industry and will give you a practical, real-life insight into how mathematical theory and technique is applied in organisational scenarios.

MSc Industrial Mathematical Modelling will see you work in small groups to solve industry-based problems using mathematical models and statistics, whilst also covering areas such as regular and chaotic dynamics, partial differential equations and fluid mechanics.

As a postgraduate student within the Department of Mathematical Sciences, your studies will be enhanced by the research insights of our international staff, as well as our recently refurbished building with dedicated modern facilities for mathematics.

Why you should study this degree

Mathematical modelling is a valuable skill for solving the real problems and challenges faced by companies and provides a useful language to describe, solve and validate the problem. As such, our industrial mathematics master's is especially suitable if you have undertaken a three-year bachelor's degree in mathematics, science or engineering and wish to apply your enhanced skills in an industrial context. The programme also also provides excellent preparation for PhD study.

This programme involves a 12 week Industrial Modelling Research Project, to be carried out during the summer - often carried in a local company, provides mathematical techniques required in an industrial context and enables you to develop the skills to solve real-life problems of relevance to industry.

Our MSc Industrial Mathematical Modelling provides a solid foundation in the core areas of mathematics relevant to industry.

Compulsory

The aim of this module is:

  • to introduce the basic concepts of programming on the practical level;
  • to introduce, explain, and implement numerical methods for solving ordinary and partial differential equations of industrial importance.

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop skills in the mathematical modelling of real life situations;
  • to develop the ability to work effectively in a group.

The aim of this module is:

  •  to derive the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics;
  • to develop students' expertise in solving simplified forms of these equations applicable to a variety of fluid flows;
  • to learn about some industrial and environmental applications of fluid mechanics.

Optional

The aim of this module is to create awareness of the power and range of abstract mathematical concepts through a basic introduction to the methods of functional analysis.

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce the concept of small and large parameters in equations and how they can be exploited to simplify difficult mathematical problems;
  • to introduce a wide range of approximation techniques to analyse differential equations and integrals.

The aim of this module is to:

  • to provide students with a rigorous mathematical introduction to the modern financial theory of security markets in discrete and continuous time models
  • to give students a solid theoretical background in the derivatives industry in discrete and continuous time models.

Compulsory

The aims of this module are to gain familiarity with modern qualitative theory of linear PDE's with particular emphasis on second-order equations as well as to study selected aspects of modern methods for simple nonlinear PDEs.

The aim of this module is to gain familiarity with theory and techniques of static optimisation and dynamic optimisation.

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop skills in the mathematical modelling of real life situations;
  • to develop the ability to work effectively in a group.

Optional

The aim of this module is to create awareness of the power and range of abstract mathematical concepts through a basic introduction to the methods of spectral theory.

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce students to the main ideas and techniques of the modern theory of nonlinear waves;
  • demonstrate how these ideas and techniques can be used in a wide range of applications.

The aim of this module is

  • To introduce both supervised and unsupervised methods for learning from data.
  • To introduce methods of dimensionality reduction.
  • To introduce the R statistical programming language for implementing methods using real data.

This module aims to

  • introduce numerical methods and associated theory for modelling of financial options;
  • teach students how to implement such numerical methods on computers;
  • gain experience in interpreting numerical results.

Compulsory

The aim of this module is to give the students experience of independent work in mathematics and its applications, especially those of an industrial nature.

You will be assessed by a combination of exams, reports, individual and group projects, and verbal presentations. You will spend approximately 14 weeks at the end of the programme devoted to an individual project, either in an industrial or engineering company, or at the University.

Where you'll study

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is based in the Schofield building, located centrally on the University campus. The building has recently undergone a £4 million refurbishment to equip it with dedicated resources for mathematics students.

As a postgraduate student, you will benefit from 24/7 access to computer labs in the Schofield Building and will also benefit from the co-location with the Mathematics Learning Support Centre.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is committed to helping you develop the skills and attributes you need to progress successfully in your chosen career.

A master’s in industrial mathematical modelling enables you to further develop a number of key transferable skills, including the ability to work effectively on your own or as part of a team, to effectively manage time and to be logical and analytical.

You will also gain comprehensive knowledge of the relevance of mathematics in the analysis of problems of concern to industry, the core discipline of mathematical modelling and a range of analytical, numerical and qualitative techniques.
