When I was deciding where to study, reputation and student experience were the most important factors for me. Loughborough stood out because of its strong academic reputation and the incredible campus environment. I wanted a university that would give me more than just a degree, I wanted somewhere I could grow personally, academically and professionally. Looking back now, I know I made the right choice.

Starting university can feel overwhelming and I remember thinking about how to manage my academics and settle in socially. One of the most important things I learned early on was the value of planning. In the first few weeks, setting up a timetable made a huge difference.

University is a chance to be very independent, and no one is constantly checking up on you, so having a weekly schedule helps you stay on top of readings and lectures. Another tip I’d give new students is to look at coursework as soon as it’s released. Don’t wait until the last two weeks before the deadline, reviewing it early gives you time to understand what’s expected and plan your approach.

Academically, I’ve found the support at Loughborough really helpful. Tutorials and seminars are smaller and more interactive, which makes it easier to ask questions. Lecturers also offer office hours every week, so you can get one-on-one help if you need it. There’s an online forum where you can post questions and see answers from both staff and other students, which is great because it helps everyone who might have the same query. These resources have made a big difference, especially during the first year when everything feels new.

Outside the classroom, Loughborough offers countless ways to get involved. Sport has been a huge part of my experience here. Even if you’re not an elite athlete, there are opportunities like IMS (Inter-Mural Sports), where halls compete in many sports.

There are also one-day events with activities like beach volleyball, which are a fun way to try something different and meet new people. I’ve played football and squash socially and it’s been a great way to make friends and stay active. The campus gym is incredible too – it even uses air pressure technology instead of traditional weights, which is something I’d never seen before.

One of the best pieces of advice I’d give to new students is to put yourself out there. Talk to people, attend hall socials and join societies. Everyone is nervous in the first week, but everyone wants to make friends. The events during Freshers are a great way to start and they really help you feel part of the community. I wish I had gone to more hall socials in my first year because they’re such a good way to meet people.

I chose Economics because I’ve always been interested in how economies work and how decisions shape markets. Having studied A-level Maths and Economics, I knew this was the right path for me. Loughborough stood out because of its reputation and the resources it offers – from academic support to placement opportunities that help you prepare for your career.

For me, university isn’t just about getting a degree; it’s about building the foundation for the future and Loughborough has given me everything I need to make the progress I want to see.
