I am studying a BA (Hons) degree in History at Loughborough University, which provided me with the valuable opportunity to study abroad at Sciences Po Strasbourg in France.

I first became aware of the opportunity to study abroad during discussions about placement and exchange opportunities in the early months of my second year. After exploring the Loughborough University website, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue and began my application. The process was straightforward, with plenty of information about institutions, options and examples of successful applications. I selected my three preferred institutions and tailored my application accordingly, submitting my CV, academic results to date, as well as a statement of intent explaining why I wanted to study abroad. I learned in February that my application had been successful, which was a relief, especially since I had secured my first choice in Strasbourg in France. The biggest challenge I faced was securing my visa on time, and so I would strongly recommend starting the application process as early as possible, as it was not as straightforward as I had expected.

As the move approached, I realised I would miss Loughborough, my friends and my family, and so I felt a little apprehensive but it didn’t diminish my excitement. Although relocating to a city with a different language initially felt disorienting, I quickly settled in and adapted to my new environment.

For me, one of the most distinctive aspects of studying abroad was the contrast in lifestyle. Strasbourg is a city rich in history, known for its beautiful Alsatian architecture and is the home of several major European political institutions. Sciences Po Strasbourg is a prestigious, city-based University that offers exceptional access to academic resources on the European Union and European politics. This strong focus made the learning experience highly complementary to my studies at Loughborough, with both institutions providing excellent and supportive academic environments.

To help me to integrate into my new community, I seized every opportunity to meet new people. I undertook proactive steps to learn French and to immerse myself into social and cultural events and societies, which included joining a local triathlon group. These experiences helped me to make friends with both French and International students, allowing me to settle quicker into my new environment.

I would highly recommend a year studying abroad, as it broadens your horizons, offers valuable academic and personal experiences and provides life lessons that extend beyond the classroom.

The exchange staff and my tutor contacted me regularly to check on my wellbeing and academic progress. They ensured I was aware of deadlines, taking the correct number of modules and most importantly, that I was enjoying my experience.

In addition, Sciences Po was excellent at supporting international students, organising regular social events to help everyone feel at home. These events involved not only international students but also French students, with a strong emphasis on integration. I found this particularly valuable, as I initially struggled with my French. However, having the opportunity to make French friends greatly improved my speaking skills and confidence.

Looking back, I wish I had taken more opportunities to travel to neighbouring cities and countries during my Study Exchange, making the most of the excellent transport connections that Strasbourg offered. As a keen triathlete, my long training rides allowed me to explore the surrounding Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest in Germany, both of which were easily accessible by bike. However, many of my friends received Erasmus grants, which made it easier for them to afford additional travel — funding that is unfortunately no longer available to UK students.

Studying abroad allowed me to immerse myself in a new culture, learn French and explore unique academic subjects to that institution. Although adapting to a new environment was challenging at first, the experience strengthened my confidence, adaptability and problem-solving skills. Overall, it was an incredibly rewarding opportunity that enhanced my personal growth, professional readiness and my outlook on the future. It inspired me to embrace new challenges with confidence and seek a career that reflects a more global perspective.
