I discovered Loughborough during my University search, after it was highly recommended by friends and family. The Psychology course content seemed fascinating and once I visited the warm and friendly campus, I knew it was the place for me!
I completed a BSc in Psychology in Education at Loughborough University and I can confidently say it’s one of the best places to study an undergraduate degree. The University offers exceptional facilities, dedicated staff, outstanding support and a vibrant campus atmosphere that together create a truly enriching student experience.
At first, I found it a little challenging to adjust after relocating for University. However, Freshers’ Week made a huge difference, it kept me busy and gave me plenty of opportunities to meet new people. During my first year, I also made use of the support services, including the health and wellbeing team. Their guidance was invaluable in helping me adapt to University life and develop effective strategies for managing the challenges of a new academic environment. Managing living costs was another learning curve but I quickly developed helpful strategies such as careful budgeting, planning meals and tracking my expenses, which made things much more manageable. It took a bit of time to settle into a routine that suited me but once I did, University life began to feel completely natural and truly enjoyable.
What I enjoyed about the course was that the teaching was grounded in the latest research, which inspired me to explore the topic areas in more depth. The course also offers strong industry links, providing valuable opportunities to prepare for life after graduation. If you’re studying Psychology in combination with another subject, your optional modules will be tailored to your chosen specialism. If you’ve opted for a single honours Psychology route, you’ll have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of modules, provided you meet any prerequisites. Either way, there’s an excellent variety of options available to suit your individual interests and goals.
I’ve found the lecturers and academic tutors to be consistently approachable, supportive and always willing to help. The course structure was clear and well-organised and the delivery was highly accessible, making it easy to revisit materials, whenever needed. I also received valuable support from the Mathematics Learning Support Centre while completing my final year dissertation. Their guidance greatly improved my confidence and understanding of statistical analysis. I attended several sessions, often without booking in advance and the staff were incredibly helpful and patient.
I wanted to make the most of my University experience and ensure I had time for activities I enjoyed alongside my studies. To maintain a healthy balance, I created a personal timetable to organise my academic work, social life and involvement in sports and other University activities. It sometimes felt busy but staying involved and managing my time effectively was completely worth it.
Beyond studying, the campus offers excellent facilities for food, socialising and sport, along with plenty of places to walk and relax, all of which support a full and balanced student experience. The campus is extensive and exploring it is a great way to get familiar with your new surroundings. Loughborough itself is a small town with a friendly atmosphere and beautiful nearby countryside, while also being conveniently located close to larger cities, giving you the best of both worlds.
I joined a variety of extra-curricular activities, which made my time at University even more rewarding including the 'train and gain' society and pole fitness, which were both so much fun. I also joined the AU cheerleading society and eventually became part of the committee, where I met amazing people and made lifelong friends. Cheerleading became my favourite activity at University and although I’ve now graduated, I’m still involved as a alumni cheerleading coach at Loughborough to stay connected to the University community! Alongside this, I worked on the LSU Action projects at the campus nursery, where I helped with their sports day and with transitions and participation, which was both fun and rewarding. I also worked at numerous Loughborough University Open Days, guiding prospective students and sharing information about the Psychology courses. All of these experiences have helped to enhance my teamwork, confidence and communication skills. Getting involved can feel intimidating at first but it is absolutely worth it, the experiences and connections you gain are incredibly valuable.
During my time at Loughborough, I completed an industrial placement year at a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school in surrey, where I worked as a Trainee SEN Teacher. I loved my placement, even with the challenges it brought, such as class moves and learning how to manage challenging behaviour. I overcame these by asking questions and learning from the experienced staff around me. The placement taught me a great deal about myself and this area of work, and it confirmed that a career in Psychology aligns with my interests. It also inspired me to pursue a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology, driven by my curiosity about behaviour and what shapes it.
My undergraduate course has helped me develop both personally and professionally. I’ve gained confidence in delivering presentations and engaging with new people and I’ve also improved my CV and interview skills through careers‑focused support. Additionally, it has allowed me to make some great connections.
My confidence and academic ability have grown tremendously thanks to the positive experiences and friendships I’ve made at Loughborough University. My advice is to say yes to opportunities and not be afraid to try something new, even if you don’t know anyone. It’s the best way to meet people and will be 100% worth it.
You really get pulled into the ‘Loughborough bubble’ and become fully immersed in University life. While the town may be small, the campus, nightlife and surrounding areas offer plenty of fun things to do, creating a lively and engaging student experience. I particularly love the campus atmosphere and the events that take place, which bring everyone together to support those involved. Being at Loughborough has allowed me to find an amazing community of people, making my time here truly special.
