Specifically designed to meet Senior Leader Apprenticeship Standard, this programme enables organisations and employees to utilise their Apprenticeship Levy to study towards an AMBA-accredited Executive MBA and develop the management and leadership capabilities required to lead at a senior level.

Our Senior Leader Apprenticeship – The Loughborough Executive MBA pathway is designed for working professionals and is studied part-time over two years in a flexible, blended learning format. This enables you to combine working full-time at your current workplace with studying part-time at one of the UK’s leading business schools.

After successfully completing the two-year Diploma and End Point Assessment you can choose to study for one further year by continuing onto The Loughborough Executive MBA. Apprentices are employed throughout the programme and will spend part of their time at the University and the rest with their employer.

Through modules such as Business Analytics and Decision Making for Leaders, the programme focuses heavily on practical problem-solving skills to address real business challenges. Our work-based assignments give you the opportunity to develop innovative solutions to current business problems, enabling you to improve organisational effectiveness and enhance your leadership skills throughout the programme.

It is also required that students taking the apprenticeship have an employer mentor (usually their line manager) from within their own organisation.

The Apprenticeship takes a practical approach to developing an individual’s skills and prepares participants for leadership career progression in their chosen sector, mainly through the development of their technical knowledge and skills and their conceptual and analytical abilities.

Our Senior Leader Apprenticeship – The Loughborough Executive MBA pathway is studied part-time and is designed to equip you with the management and leadership capabilities required to lead at a senior level. The apprenticeship is studied over two years. The optional top-up to The Loughborough Executive MBA occurs in year three.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • Develop self-awareness of personal effectiveness and recognition of how to influence others;
  • Explore the application of theory for fostering more effective work relationships to develop high performing teams;
  • Build strategies for continuing leadership development for future-readiness.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for an understanding of financial management and its impact on decision-making in a variety of organisational contexts;
  • Develop the ability to analyse and interpret organisational performance;
  • Expose participants to a range of issues surrounding accounting for sustainability;
  • Equip students with an understanding of economic concepts and models appropriate to business decision-making.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Develop an understanding of the role of business analytics in an organisation;
  • Develop an understanding of big data, and related ethical issues, and how it can be used to inform decision-making;
  • Develop an appreciation of a range of analytical methods to improve decision making in organisations.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide participants with a broad and deep understanding of issues associated with the management of human resources within organisations; and
  • Develop participants skills in people and performance management.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide participants with an understanding of the principles and tools relating to the marketing concept;
  • Explore strategic marketing issues.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide participants with the knowledge and skills to formulate a strategic business plan;
  • Equip students with knowledge on strategic positioning, strategic capabilities and resources, strategic options, scenario planning and innovative strategic thinking;
  • Create an understanding of risk factors and the importance of stakeholder engagement and governance models.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • develop an understanding of the role of leadership in guiding and evaluating decision making efforts in different organisational contexts;
  • develop a critical and practical appreciation of the leadership behaviours required for effective decision making;
  • develop a critical and practical appreciation of how structured decision processes can help leaders increase their ability to structure decision situations, gather expert knowledge, analyse values and preferences, reach timely closure, and learn from decision-making efforts.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Introduce the concepts of innovation, entrepreneurship theory, design thinking and creativity;
  • Enable participants to utilise a detailed risk analysis tool to evaluate a commercial opportunity;
  • Explore the implementation of a new product or process, whilst understanding the constraints under which many firms operate, with an emphasis on SMEs and start up business;
  • Enable students to collaborate with an external business in a consultancy capacity.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide students with an understanding of the ways in which organisations manage their operations;
  • Develop skills in using operational management techniques to improve operational effectiveness;
  • Develop an appreciation of global contexts and challenges that impact operations management.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide a theoretical and practical introduction to leadership
  • Provide an introduction to relevant academic and practitioner literature on leadership
  • Help students apply leadership theory to their own workplace and their own behaviour

The aims of this module are to:

  • develop participants' understanding of leadership within an environment of change
  • increase participants' skills in building agile and collaborative cultures which gain buy-in for change initiatives
  • equip participants to initiate and lead change in organisations and to manage conflict that might arise from the change process
  • identify methods for influencing organisational vision, culture and values
  • shape and manage communication strategy within change initiatives
  • develop skills to influence upwards and outwards
  • enhance negotiation and advocacy skills to build reputation and effective collaboration.

Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A minimum of five years’ management/professional experience plus a 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) or membership of an approved chartered institute or a diploma in management studies.

Senior Leader Apprenticeship applicants will also need to provide:

Evidence of Maths and English qualifications at Level 2 (GCSE Grade C or above). This is a Government requirement for all apprenticeships.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:
