Our MSc Digital Business Management will give you the critical information systems foundations and future-facing digital skills needed for the implementation and leadership of information systems and digital innovation initiatives.

Compulsory modules

Process and Programming for Analytics (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to understand various processes involved in big data analytics
  • to understand and experience python and other programming approaches to big data
  • to develop a critical and practical appreciation of activities and factors involved in organising big data analytics initiatives and projects
  • to understand the skills and capabilities required for leading big data analytics applications
  • to build the project management skills required for successful leadership of big data analytics initiatives and projects.

Information Architecture for AI and Digital Spaces (15 credits)

The aims of this module are for students to be able to:

  • understand and distinguish between the information needs of users in a digital organisation
  • understand the technology that has defined the semantic web
  • understand the new technologies that make up the semantic web
  • understand the methods available for integrating external and internal data, information and knowledge
  • understand the role that information architecture plays in AI.

Digital Platforms, AI and Business Models (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a critical understanding and practical ability in use of the core IT infrastructure, architecture, processes and technologies that underpin business efficiency and effectiveness in the modern data-driven organisation.

Study, Research and Employability Skills (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • encourage students to take ownership of their personal learning and development;
  • improve student's capabilities in the area of literature searching, referencing, academic writing and critical analysis;
  • to build the skills required for effective working individually or in teams;
  • to equip students with the relevant theoretical and practical research method knowledge required to design, plan and execute their own research.

Compulsory modules

Cloud Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce and develop the key principles of enterprise resource planning (ERP)
  • to introduce the fundamental concepts of supply chain management (SCM) in the context of ERP
  • to provide an understanding of the role of ERP systems in the effective management of organisational processes
  • to provide hands-on experience of SAP, an industry standard ERP software.

Managing Big Data (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to equip students with the core concept of Big Data theory and practice, and its role within a digitally transformative environment;
  • to develop an awareness of the skills required for managing big data in different sectors/industries, and explore software tools available in managing large data sets;
  • to identify and develop competence in Big Data Technology and its integration with business analytics;
  • to gain knowledge on the applicability of Big Data Analytics in businesses, to uncover actionable insights for strategic decision-making.

Leadership and Project Management (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of how to manage projects and their risks for both the individual managing their own and for the team leader managing a larger-scale project. The emphasis is on getting a quality product or service delivered on time and within budget.

Digital Innovation Lab: Incremental and Radical Change (15 credits)

Lead digital innovation in modern businesses. This module explores incremental and radical innovation, product management, market dynamics, startup culture, and financial considerations to develop an understanding of digital transformation. By integrating theoretical frameworks with real-world applications, students will be prepared to develop innovation strategies within startups, established enterprises, and digital ecosystems. Throughout the course students will develop their own proposals for digital innovation in the form of a business case that is informed by theoretical concepts.

Digital Ethics and Trust in Business and Society (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • Understand and critically review the societal and ethical issues associated with the digital technologies in the 21st century. Understand the minimum legal standard required and also consider higher standards that reflect societal moral operating principles. Consider a holistic view from the differing perspectives of citizens, individuals, parents, employees, employers and leaders.
  • Understand the basics of bias and its impact on ethical decision making.
  • Understand the elements that build trust, how these are measured, and their impact both societally and economically.
  • Understand the basic concepts of data ethics and its application.
  • Understand the impact of cultural differences in a globally connected society.
  • Apply multidisciplinary concepts including diversity, equality, inclusion, critical thinking, reflection to construct, articulate and communicate ethical purpose from a leadership perspective.
  • Be able to rationalise personal thinking, decision making and reaction (from an understanding of bias).
  • Create an ethical framework that could be applied for leadership development. Apply data ethics in design, accounting for cultural difference.
  • Encourage critical thinking, personal reflection.
  • Work and collaborate in a diverse team.
  • Articulate a critical analysis of the ethical standards required by senior leaders in today's society.
  • Encourage a holistic approach when dealing with the complexity of a digitally connected global society.

Compulsory modules

Dissertation ISDI (45 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • apply appropriate varieties of research methods used in information science, management and business technology fields;
  • undertake research, which would usually be of an applied nature, into an appropriate aspect of information management and/or business technology, or a cognate field, under supervision;
  • apply and develop knowledge, skills and experience acquired during the programme of study.
