Meet Jose Bocanegra

Hello! I'm Jose. I chose to study Musculoskeletal Sport Science and Health at Loughborough University as it is ranked as number 1 worldwide for sports-related subjects. The facilities on offer and the reputation of the module leaders within their fields, also made me confident the programme was the right choice for me.

This programme brings together different areas of sport science to give you a clear understanding of how musculoskeletal injuries are assessed and treated, the rehabilitation processes involved, and the innovative health and biomechanical technologies used.

Academic members of staff were always very helpful and supportive throughout my MSc journey. Our class included international students from a range of backgrounds—such as sport scientists, physiotherapists, and medical doctors. This diversity meant I could learn from others with different perspectives shaped by their experience and education.

This course is delivered in partnership with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), an Olympic legacy project focused on improving health and wellbeing. You’ll learn from both clinical and academic experts and have access to state-of-the-art laboratories designed to turn cutting-edge research into real-world care and support.

Combining the state-of-the-art facilities at NCSEM-EM with Loughborough’s world-class sporting environment creates a unique learning experience focused on the scientific study of musculoskeletal health and performance in sport and exercise.

After graduation

Until very recently I was working as a R&D researcher in biomechanical technologies. My extended knowledge in the fields of biomechanics, new technologies and the risk, and treatment, of sports injuries made me feel very prepared for the role.

Now, after a year working in Spain, I have returned to the UK to start my PhD at Loughborough University. My PhD project is titled: ‘Optimising rehabilitation pathways for severely injured personnel’.

I will investigate the relationship between muscle size, strength, gait and functional outcomes for a military population, following single or bilateral lower limb amputation. These findings will be used to individualise rehabilitation pathways and improve longer term mobility for this patient population. The second half of the project will translate these findings to a comparative group of young civilian trauma patients.

Completing my MSc at Loughborough University gave me a strong foundation for my career. It prepared me to tackle challenges confidently throughout both my academic and professional journey.
