Right to rent

Landlords/letting agents are required to check their tenants’ immigration status before granting a tenancy agreement, to ensure that the tenant has a ‘right to rent’ in the UK.

If you are a visa holder, you will need to provide a share code to prove your right to rent. This is generated online here and allows landlords to confirm your immigration status. Your share code is valid for 90 days, so if you are renting a property, ensure you have an up-to-date code before signing an agreement.

Please see the gov.uk website for more information on proving your right to rent.

If you are a prospective student, please note that you will not be able to generate a share code until your visa has been granted. Without a valid visa, you may face difficulties renting accommodation off-campus. You can request that the accommodation is held for you while you wait on the visa decision and book an appointment with our team to review your contract prior to signing and before it becomes legally and financially binding.

If you have any concerns about the right to rent checks or wish to book an appointment for a contract check before you sign, please contact the Student Advice and Support Service.
