Pregnancy

It is possible that you or your partner may become pregnant whilst studying at university.

Whilst you aren’t required to notify the university of the pregnancy, you should strongly consider contacting Student Services to ensure that appropriate adjustments can be put in place during and following the pregnancy.

Under the Equality Act 2010, pregnancy and maternity are considered protected characteristics, meaning you are legally protected from discrimination.

For general advice about your or your partner’s pregnancy, you can contact your GP or Brook.

Your Studies

Taught Students

You may decide to take a temporary break from your studies i.e. a Leave of Absence (LOA). This must be agreed with your School, and you will be required to complete a Leave of Absence form. You will agree a return date.  We have information online about how taking a LOA can impact your Student funding and accommodation.

You may also consider stretching a year of your degree or more to accommodate your circumstances.

Student visa holders

Taking a leave of absence could impact your immigration permission and could result in your Student visa being cancelled.

If you are a Doctoral Researcher, Student immigration permission can accommodate a deferral/cessation of studies of up to 60 days, provided the course is still expected to be completed before your visa expiry date.

If further time is needed beyond 60 days, Doctoral Researchers might also consider taking annual leave which should be agreed with their supervisor in advance.

We have information online about Doctoral Researchers taking time away from study.

Welfare Benefits

Students able to claim UK benefits could be entitled to Child Benefit & Universal Credit depending on your eligibility even if you are a full time student.

Finance

If you have caring responsibilities, you may qualify for extra financial support. SFE offers a Childcare GrantParents' Learning Allowance, and an Adult Dependants' Grant for full-time students, subject to income assessment.

Additionally, the University’s Hardship Fund may provide financial assistance in the form of a grant to students facing unexpected financial difficulties during the academic year. The Summer Fund may also offer support, depending on your circumstances.

Immigration

You may need to apply for a dependant visa for your new baby once they have been born. We have guidance about Dependant's visas online.

How can the University Support you?

You can contact Student Advice and Support Service for guidance on what might need to happen next with student finance, your studies, accommodation, your new baby’s immigration status etc.

You can access support from the Mental Wellbeing team, who are available to offer guidance on managing your studies and wellbeing during and after pregnancy. They can also advise on any adjustments you may need to your studies. To get in touch, you can email them at studentwellbeing@lboro.ac.uk or complete the Online Referral Form.
