Bursaries and scholarships
Teacher training bursaries and scholarships
Teacher training bursaries and scholarships can provide money to help pay for your teacher training and living costs. They are not treated as taxable income and you do not need to repay them.
The bursaries available for teacher training may change from year to year, depending on which subjects are short of teachers. Currently, PGCE Mathematics students may be eligible for a teacher training bursary but PGCE Physical Education does not qualify.
You must be eligible for student finance to receive a bursary. Bursary eligibility is determined by the course provider (Teacher Education) from your application details, they will confirm any entitlement and payment details. Teacher Education contact: pgce@mailbox.lboro.ac.uk
A scholarship may be available instead of a bursary, scholarship eligibility and application procedures are set by the scholarship providers, any scholarship application needs to be made directly to the relevant scholarship provider prior to any deadline.
For more information see Get Into Teaching.
Loughborough University PGCE Travel Bursaries
PGCE travel bursaries are available for low-income PGCE students at Loughborough University.
Eligibility requirements
The travel bursary is potentially available to students who are eligible for maintenance/living costs loan from SFE, SAAS or SFNI.
Income from a Teacher Training bursary or scholarship is considered in combination with the household income assessed by the relevant student finance body.
You can find PGCE bursary terms and conditions for your year of entry in the Student Handbook (see ‘How do I find out more about the Loughborough University Bursary?’ - the PGCE amounts and income thresholds are covered in Annex 1: Awards.)
How to apply for the Loughborough PGCE Travel Bursary
No separate application is required. The University relies on household income information available from Student Finance England (or its equivalent in Scotland or Northern Ireland) and value of any teacher training bursary. Student Records & Operations will confirm any entitlement and payment schedule in accordance with the bursary terms and conditions.
