Year of Reading at Pilkington Library

Posted: 12 January 2026

University life can be busy, intense, and full of screen time. Which is why the Year of Reading is the perfect chance to slow down and reconnect with reading, whether it’s for study or for yourself.

The Year of Reading is a national initiative encouraging people to read more and rediscover the joy of reading in all its forms. At Pilkington Library, we’re celebrating by showing that reading doesn’t have to mean textbooks and deadlines. It can be a way to relax, escape, and take a real break from your day.

Throughout the year, you’ll see themed book displays, reading recommendations, and a range of low-pressure events designed with students in mind. From chilled reading parties where you bring your own book, to curated collections.

Whether you love fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, poetry, or audiobooks, the library has something for you. We also offer digital and accessible formats, so you can read in a way that suits your schedule and preferences.

Reading can be a great way to support your wellbeing, improve focus, and give your brain a break from constant notifications. Even a few minutes of reading can make a difference.

Keep an eye on our library spaces and social media to see what’s coming up during the Year of Reading — and feel free to pop in, pick up a book, and make reading part of your student life.
