From November 2026 to 1 January 2027, Open Access options for authors publishing with Wiley from Loughborough University will be limited.
Wiley have informed us that the dedicated section of the Wiley-Jisc Read and Publish deal which enables publishing in Fully Open Access journals for UK universities is expected to be fully allocated by November 2026. The fund should be available again from January 2027. Hybrid journals will still be covered by our deal with them.
Why this has happened
The UK Jisc deal with Wiley has a national fund for Fully Open Access journals that is shared by all UK institutions. If this fund is used up within a year Wiley will no longer provide discounts for publication fees. Hybrid journals are unaffected and will continue to be covered by the deal.
What authors should do
From November 2026 until 1 January 2027, you should consider other publishing options if you do not have the funds to pay the publication fees. If you are UKRI-funded, you can still use the Loughborough University Block Grant for Fully Open Access Journals. Fully Open Access from Wiley should be available again after January 2027.
What if your article is awaiting publication in a Wiley Fully Open Access Journal?
Authors will not be charged for publication fees until all three things below have happened: we have approved the author as being affiliated to Loughborough, Wiley have accepted the article after peer review and the author has signed their open access agreement.
If Wiley bill you for your Fully Open Access Journal article between November 2026 and January 2027 articles will be declined for funding automatically due to ‘fund exhaustion’. Wiley will proceed to ask the author for payment or to decline the submission.
If your article is in the process of being published but not ready for billing until after January 2027 you may be able to use the Fully Open Access fund for the new financial year. However, this timeline is not under our control, and the publisher will not delay or defer the process. You can talk to the journal editors if you have any questions.
Please contact the Library Open Research team if you think you may be affected and would like to discuss your options.
