University Iftaar 2026
We’d like to invite you to this year’s University Iftaar.
Iftaar (also spelled Iftar) is the meal Muslims eat to break their fast at sunset during the month of Ramadan.
-
It happens every evening after a full day of fasting from dawn to sunset.
-
Traditionally, people break their fast with dates and water.
-
After that, families and communities often enjoy a larger meal together.
-
It’s not just about food — it’s a moment of gratitude, reflection, and togetherness.
The University Iftaar, open to all staff and students, offers the opportunity for guest to catch a glimpse of this significant time for Muslim people. Starting with a short welcome talk from Professor Moataz Attallah, the Adhaan (call to prayer) will follow and guests are invited to eat a date and drink water before sharing a meal together. Guests to the Iftaar who have been fasting and wish to pray can make their way to the Chaplaincy prayer rooms where Adhaan will also take place.
We encouraged Muslim staff and students to invite colleagues and friends, of the Muslim faith, other or none, who wish to share in this moment with them. Guests who aren't Muslim may wish experience a day of fasting alongside their friends or colleagues, and are also welcome to join with or observe the time of prayer that will take place in the Chaplaincy prayer rooms.
During the Iftaar, we will also hear from Bodrul Islam, head of fundraising for Maa Global, our chosen charity this year. A portion of the ticket will be donated to Maa Global, supporting their work in Bangladesh.
Please get in touch if you have any questions, we'd be pleased to help.
