Supervision and collaboration
A carefully designed system of supervision and monitoring will support you to achieve your maximum research potential.
You will receive support from at least two academic supervisors with different, but related, research expertise, and have the opportunity to meet and work with a range of academic staff and students through research forums, seminars and involvement in research groups.
There are also opportunities to broaden your experience through collaborations with practitioners working on campus, regionally or nationally in the governance, participation and promotion, sports science and medicine, coaching and education of sport and physical activity.
Outstanding facilities and resources
The School of Sport and Exercise Health Sciences is based over a number of facilities including the National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine, the Clyde Williams building and the Performance Centre, which together encompass more than 50 research and teaching laboratories.

You will be part of a world-leading international School generating extensive new knowledge and impact across sport, exercise and health sciences. The School has a dynamic and vibrant research community of more than 200 Doctoral Researchers.
Training and Skills Development
There are a number of introductory and welcome sessions for new Doctoral Researchers, covering School and University procedures, how to approach your PhD, and more.
As a Doctoral Researcher, you will have the opportunity to select from a wide range of skills training offered both within the School and by the Doctoral College. During your PhD, you will have monthly review meetings with your supervisor as well as the opportunity to present your research plans and findings to other members of the School to receive feedback and advice.
A unique environment and experience
Loughborough offers a unique environment and experience for the study of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. As the UK’s premier sports university, there is an outstanding and unrivalled range of sports and exercise activities available on campus, either for personal participation or for collaborative research opportunities.
Many sports organisations and national governing bodies are based on campus e.g. English Institute of Sport, Volleyball England, British Swimming, England Cricket, Youth Sport Trust and many more. The University’s own high performance sport programme, the presence of numerous international athletes and teams, as well as the support infrastructure around these athletes (sports science, medicine and coaching) provide a unique high performance environment.
The National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine runs a range of NHS clinics in sport and exercise medicine that provide opportunities for clinical and health collaborations.
