Tom graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2018 with a BSc in Psychology, following this up with an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Northumbria University. Following this, he enrolled in the BPS Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology, which he is currently enrolled in to become a registered psychologist within the area.

Taking a keen interest in elite sport and the role of sport psychology at this level, and having worked in a variety of levels within sport previously, Tom began his study towards a PhD in October 2020 with the hope of developing his understanding in working in elite sport performance. His PhD is funded by the Doctoral College Research Studentship and supervised by Dr. David Fletcher.

Research

Research title: Psychology of Performance Excellence and Management within Elite Sports.

The project will address how high achievers thrive on pressure and deliver sustained success by looking at various performance themes:

  • Leadership and Management (e.g., high-performance leadership, managing elite teams)
  • Environments and Cultures (e.g., organizational functioning and effectiveness)
  • People and teams (e.g., resilience, emotions, mental health and well-being)
  • Consultancy and Coaching (e.g., psychosocial interventions)
