Hate crime in football Germany

Find out more about the discussions and learnings from our workshop held in Germany, as part of the 'For the love of the Game?' project.

'For the love of the Game' organisers hosted a workshop in Germany in order to get a European perspective when exploring hate crime experiences and solutions. The workshop consisted of a panel of speakers, alongside group discussions to explore issues and potential solutions.

The team utilised creative methods to balance out the power dynamics and to help people reflect on their experiences (or lack of them). The session finished with the writing of a manifesto to bring together solutions and ways forward.

Berlin Workshop:

The Berlin event spoke with experts in Germany about the different ways they engage fans and clubs on hate crime. The reason Germany was chosen is that their strong fan scene has also led to a strong engagement with issues around the game. They also have Fanprojekts that use social workers to actively engage young fans to address problematic behaviours around football. This approach is different to the UK, which has organised around supporters associations, and campaign groups.
