What we ask of the employer
Prior to the placement
A link to an online Host Declaration Form should have been sent to you by the student to be completed and returned to the Placements and Study Exchange Team at SSHplacements@lboro.ac.uk. The placement cannot be approved for the purposes of DPS until we receive this. If you have not already been sent one by the student, then please follow this link to the Host Declaration Form.
At the start of the placement
• Assign a workplace supervisor to the student to oversee the student’s work, give support and analyse their progress.
• Draw up a programme of work for the student, including suitable relevant experiences, which requires a level of intellectual participation appropriate to a recent graduate.
• Complete an induction programme with the student, going over everything they need to know about the workplace and colleagues, as well as health & safety requirements and contacts.
The Placement Tutor
- An academic member of staff will be assigned to the student as a Placement Tutor.
- The allocated Placement Tutor will hold three meetings with the student and employer.
- The first meeting will typically be within the first month of the placement starting.
- The second will take place about halfway through their placement year, usually between November and the end of March.
- The third meeting should be in the final few of months of their placement, usually between March and June, before they finish.
Prior to the placement progress meetings
- Before the first meeting, ensure the student is settling into the workplace and has an appropriate plan of work.
- Complete the first appraisal for the student, ahead of the second placement tutor
- The Employer Appraisal Form can be found here - Employer-appraisal-HPW
- The Employer Appraisal Form scale definitions can be found here - Employer-Appraisal-scale-definitions
- If you have your own appraisal form that relates to the student’s performance and gives an overall level of satisfaction, you may use that instead of ours.
- The student should submit their first appraisal form to their Placement Tutor before their second meeting, and their second appraisal should be submitted at the end of the year with the rest of their required work.
The placement progress meetings
- Please meet the student’s Placement Tutor and review the student’s progress. Adjust the programme of work as necessary.
- It is the student’s responsibility to organise the meetings around the availability of all parties involved.
- The student’s first appraisal should be complete, ready to discuss in the second meeting.
- During the meeting you should talk about the student’s progress, workload, and any areas of improvement for the student to work on. New targets could be set for the student to work towards, to help them achieve the desired goals.
Before the end of the placement
Complete the final appraisal form and ensure the student has a copy for their DPS.
