The Diploma in Professional and Industrial Studies
Our placement scheme leads to the award of the Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or the Diploma in Industrial studies (DIS) on successful completion of the student placement.
45 weeks of work
A minimum of 45 weeks activity (excluding holidays) of either a 'substantive' nature i.e., of graduate level or 'supplementary' activity such as online learning, voluntary work etc. A minimum of 25 weeks should be of a 'substantive' nature.
Interim and final report
The student must complete an interim report and a final report reflecting on their placement experience. The interim report to cover items including, but not limited to, an introduction to the company and reflection on the application and induction processes - length guideline: 1,000-1,500 words. The final report to cover a brief description of the work you have undertaken at the company over the year and a substantial reflection on your personal development over the year - length guideline: 3,000-5,000 words.
Poster or video presentation
A poster or video presentation to first- and second-year students providing information and reflection on the work placement experience upon return to university. Students have the oppurtuinity to display and talk about their work during an exhibition in November.
Competent performance
A competent performance of duties whilst on placement; maintaining good conduct and upholding the reputation and standards of both the company and the University. This is evidenced through one employer appraisals during the placement, one to be completed and discussed with the Placement Tutor at the second visit, the second to be submitted at the end of the student’s placement.
Student responsibilities
• It is the overall responsibility of the student to ensure that they receive a suitable professional experience; to maintain satisfactory communication with the University; and to ensure that the requirements for the award of DPS/DIS are met.
• Students are required to complete their DPS/DIS assessments outside of their working hours.
• Students are equipped with all relevant information that they need for successful completion of their placement year, as well as the award of the DPS/DIS. This information is held on LEARN, the School’s virtual learning environment (VLE). Please ask the student to access this information when required.
