Investigating real-time computer vision for UAVs to detect people and vessels at sea.

Profile

Sam is a postgraduate researcher in the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University. His PhD focuses on machine vision for maritime uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), developing real-time computer vision methods for drones to detect people, vessels and other targets at sea for both search-and-rescue, ocean monitoring and safety applications.

Sam holds a BEng in Electronics and Computer Systems Engineering from Loughborough University. After his degree, he completed an internship with the Intelligent Automation Centre, where he helped develop a part-measurement system that used a laser steered by motorised mirrors to characterise components with high precision.
