Background

Hussam Fraij brings over 24 years of experience in engineering design, manufacturing, and education to his current role as a University Teacher in Engineering Design at Loughborough University (Oct 2022 - Present). 

Engineering Expertise

  • Sep 2001 – Nov 2002: Began career as a Mechanical Engineer, gaining hands-on experience in 3D CAD modelling, mold design, and production planning.
  • Feb 2003 – Jun 2004: Advanced to Senior Design Engineer, further developing technical design capabilities and contributing to industrial tooling projects.
  • Jun 2004 – Jan 2012: Served as Fabrication Unit Supervisor at KADDB, leading a team of engineers and technicians. Oversaw all aspects of CNC machine shop operations, including new design and research projects, production planning, and reverse engineering.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong foundation in 3D CAD tools (Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Fusion 360), CNC CAM programming (FeatureCAM), and manufacturing processes including 3D printing, CNC machining, and traditional machining.

Educational Leadership

  • Jan 2012 – Aug 2022: Worked at Abu Dhabi Polytechnic as a Lecturer and Course Leader, delivering modules in Engineering Graphics, Mechanical Workshop, CAD/CAM, and Manufacturing Processes.
  • Led the development of the Innovation Lab, integrating research, 3D modeling, and prototyping facilities.
  • Established and managed the Autodesk Certification Regional Testing Centre at Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, aligning academic instruction with professional certification standards and overseeing the implementation and sustainability of Autodesk exams across the region.
  • Oct 2022 – Present: Joined Loughborough University as a University Teacher in Engineering Design.
    • Module Leader for Advanced Computer Aided Design CAD- WSC300, with a focus on advanced CAD techniques and applications.
    • Actively contributes to the delivery and development of engineering design modules, including WSA400, WSB501, WSA508, WSC606, and WSA403, supporting student learning through lectures, project-based activities, and supervision.
    • Supervises BEng and MEng individual projects, serves as examiner, and acts as placement visitor tutor.

  • Certified professional in Autodesk Inventor, Certified SolidWorks. 
  • Delivered 3D printing workshops at Baynounah Institute, Emirates Youth, and Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, engaging students and staff through theatre presentations and classroom sessions to promote awareness and hands-on understanding of additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Presented and Judged at CAD Week, hosted by UAE University in collaboration with ASME UAE, Delivered a technical session on the use of Fusion 360 in design and manufacturing, and served as a judge for the 3D design and modelling competition, evaluating student projects and promoting excellence in CAD innovation.
