Help for terminally ill people in Manchester following CRSP report findings

Following the publication of the centre’s Dying in Poverty report, Manchester City Council have put forward a plan to ensure that anyone who has a person in their household diagnosed with a terminal illness, has their Council Tax paid for them until the person’s death.

The scheme has been created in a direct response to the report which found that in Manchester around 42% of working age and 30% of pension age residents die in poverty.

Dr Juliet Stone who carried out the research said ‘Our research showed that more than 100,000 people are dying in poverty every year across the UK – and in places like Manchester that already have high levels of poverty, this is particularly stark. The Council’s decision to remove one source of financial burden for people in the last year of life is welcome news, and will go towards alleviating financial stress for people at this vulnerable time.’
