About us
The Centre for Information Management (CIM) is a cross-disciplinary research centre, the Centre was established in 2013 to critically engage with the power, potential, and perils of information in the digital age.
What is the Centre for Information Management?
We are an interdisciplinary research centre with more than a decade of experience at the forefront of critical information science, exploring the power, potential and perils of information and intelligent knowledge management in the digital age.
Our work brings together leading experts in areas like digital ethics, AI governance, data sustainability, and socio-technical design with a shared objective. Our goal is simple: make technology work for people and communities. At CIM, we’re committed to renewing the promise of the digital era; to ‘do digital right’.
What does ‘responsible information management’ mean?
Organisations, whether businesses, charities, or government bodies, are built on the processes they use to create, store and use information. When organisation’s information processes change, so do their priorities, efficiency, and impact.
Digital technologies have transformed how organisations work, creating huge opportunities but also significant challenges. While the changes born of ‘digital transformation’ have often increased convenience and efficiency, they have also shifted societies’ balance of power in ways that aren’t always good for people, organisations, or communities.
That’s why the Centre for Information Management (CIM) promotes ‘responsible information management’. We believe information processes should enable the delivery of social benefits and mitigate harms. Responsible information management means building ethics, sustainability, and societal impact into every stage of digital systems.
Our guiding principles
Responsible innovation by design
We believe digital transformation must be both research-led and value-driven. Our research addresses the growing real-world harms and challenges of digital systems, from misinformation and algorithmic bias to social media harms, data waste and environmental impact. We ask not just what technology can do, but who it serves, how, and at what cost.
Interdisciplinary by design
We bring together business, policy and academics from across STEM subjects, social sciences, and the arts to co-create research of value and consequence. Our projects have tangible, real-world focus, such as examining the role of AI in public services and the impact of blockchain in insurance. We combine technical expertise with ethical consideration and inclusive collaboration. Our projects span sectors including the civil service, policing, healthcare, agritech, transport and more.
Impact-driven, industry-connected
We work with global firms, national bodies, and communities to translate research into practical solutions. Our partnerships include Triumph Motorcycles, Network Rail, RISE Mutual, and UK and international police forces. Through our advisory work, tools, PhDs, and speaker series, we act as a catalyst for more ethical, transparent, and inclusive digital futures.
