Dr Jenny Spiga represented the ARAMP Group at a recent visit to the research beamline of the Proton Therapy Centre at The Christie in Manchester, as part of an event organised by the MaThRad (Mathematical Theory of Radiation Transport) collaboration.

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiotherapy that uses beams of protons to target tumours while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. Accurate modelling of proton interactions, including the production and transport of secondary neutrons, is important for understanding radiation doses and further improving treatment techniques.

The visit included a tour of the facility and technical discussions on challenges in proton therapy, with a particular focus on advancing simulation methods and improving models of radiation interactions.

Special thanks go to Dr Mike Taylor and the team at The Christie for their warm welcome, informative tour and presentations, and to the MaThRad collaboration for organising the event and sharing an impressive ‘box of tricks’.

The discussions offered valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, strengthen research connections and explore future collaborations.
