Sarah Bugby and Lois Wright attended the 2026 NWDRF (Nuclear Waste and Decommissioning Research Forum) Industry Day and NDA Decommissioning Seminar.
The seminar covered updates from working groups within the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), encouraging discussion between researchers and PhD students within the NDA.
Lois presented a poster titled ‘Energy Resolved-Backscatter X-Ray Imaging for Safety Inspection and Assessment in Nuclear Decommissioning’. This work explores compact backscatter imaging for the non-destructive inspection of pipes and vessels in difficult to access areas of nuclear decommissioning sites. The poster presented a calibration curve demonstrating the relationship between the number of backscattered photons and the density of a material. This enables the estimation of material density from the measurement of backscattered photons.
