The Loughborough Teaching Best Practice Awards celebrate and showcase colleagues’ excellent teaching and ingenuity whilst also building upon our community of best practice by creating a collection of case studies and resources. This year, Sarah's case study 'Teaching that can't be streamed: Giving students a reason to show up' was 'Highly Commended' and is now available online as part of Loughborough's community of practice.
The case study is based on Sarah's third year Medical Physics module. This module introduces students to the uses of physics in medicine, and allows them to gain an appreciation of how physics contributes to society. Alongside learning about the fundamental principles in medical physics, students are encouraged to independently investigate advanced techniques, and to approach real-world problems with many competing considerations.
The module uses a blended learning approach where students complete self study materials (including reading, recorded lectures, online quizzes and activities, and simulations) prior to in-person sessions which are then focused on discussion and collaborative problem solving rather than information delivery.
