About the centre

Rooted in Loughborough’s educational practice and connected to wider developments across the sector, it works with academic colleagues, Professional Services teams and external partners to explore how AI can be used thoughtfully, ethically and effectively in educational contexts.

Its work extends beyond AI tools. The Centre supports colleagues through practical guidance, workshops, networking opportunities, showcases and innovation projects, while helping to build the confidence, capability and institutional understanding needed for meaningful adoption.

A key part of this work is contributing to university guidance and policy on AI use in education. This includes areas such as academic integrity, assessment practice, inclusion, responsible innovation and the future of learning and teaching.

Through collaboration, experimentation and critical reflection, the Centre supports responsible AI adoption across higher education, connecting practical innovation with institutional guidance, governance and evidence-informed educational practice.

Internal community hub

The Centre is supported by an active AI in Education community, including a university-wide hub of more than 300 members and AI champions from departments across the University. This community helps connect colleagues, share practice and raise emerging questions around AI in learning, teaching, assessment and governance.

Our areas of activity

The Centre’s work is organised around connected areas of activity that support responsible AI adoption in education. These areas bring together practical experimentation, institutional guidance and evidence-informed discussion.

AI governance and responsible practice

We contribute to institutional guidance, policy development and decision-making around the use of AI in education. This includes questions of ethics, transparency, accountability, academic integrity, assessment design and responsible innovation.

AI literacy and capability building

We support colleagues in developing the confidence and understanding needed to use AI appropriately in educational contexts. This includes workshops, practical guidance, community discussions and opportunities to share emerging practice.

Educational innovation

We explore how AI can support learning and teaching through practical innovation projects, including AI-supported feedback, interactive educational tools, simulations, avatars and AI-generated learning materials.

Assessment, feedback and academic integrity

We examine how AI is changing assessment practice, feedback design and expectations around academic integrity. Our work supports approaches that are fair, proportionate and aligned with meaningful evidence of learning.

Inclusion, accessibility and equitable AI

We consider how AI can be used in ways that support inclusive educational practice and reduce, rather than reproduce, barriers. This includes attention to accessibility, bias, fairness and the varied needs of learners and educators.

Knowledge sharing and sector engagement

We share learning through publications, articles, events, case studies and external collaborations. This helps connect institutional practice with wider conversations across higher education.
