Brown will lead one of Loughborough's most high-profile sporting programmes, spanning the Premiership Team and Lightning Rugby franchise, and will be responsible for driving excellence from grassroots participation through to elite performance, as well as delivering the commercial ambitions for rugby across both the men's and women's game.
Reporting to the Director of Sport, Lou Gear, he will shape strategy across BUCS, the National League and PWR competition, building on Loughborough's women’s rugby partnership with Northampton Saints and strengthening relationships across the wider rugby landscape.
He joins as the University celebrates its 45th consecutive overall BUCs win and as the men’s rugby team prepare to regain the BUCs Super Rugby title, after a second-place finish last season. The women’s Lightning franchise continues to develop in the PWR, with growing international representation across the squad. Sixteen Loughborough-linked players competed in the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, with seven called up to the winning England Roses side.
Brown brings a wealth of experience to the role, having enjoyed an outstanding 21-year career in professional rugby. He joined the Harlequins academy in 2005 and spent 17 years at the club, making 351 appearances and helping Quins win two Premiership titles and a European Challenge Cup, before later representing Newcastle Falcons and Leicester Tigers.
At international level, Brown earned 72 caps for England and remains the country's most-capped specialist full-back. He won two Six Nations titles, including a Grand Slam, and was named 2014 Six Nations Player of the Championship – the only English player to have received the award. He retired from professional rugby in 2025 with the fourth-highest number of appearances in Premiership Rugby history and as the competition's eighth-highest try-scorer.
Alongside his playing career, Brown completed a Master's degree in Sporting Directorship, supporting his transition into leadership and performance roles beyond the field. In December 2025 he was appointed Sporting Director of Esher RFC in National League 2, where he led the club's rugby programme, strengthening its performance environment and culture while overseeing recruitment, coaching structures, player development and the pathway into senior rugby.
