Loughborough researcher helps support Vincent Luis’s Ironman World Championship victory and Cassandre Beaugrand ‘s WTCS gold

Two triathlon athletes in racing suits embrace at the finish area after a competition, with one athlete wearing a leafy victory wreath and flowers visible in the background.

Dr Mike Higgins, who recently completed his PhD in High-Performance Leadership at Loughborough University, was a member of the team that secured two international triathlon victories.

Dr Higgins has played a role in the team behind both Vincent Luis's recent Ironman World Championship victory and Cassandre Beaugrand's recent World Triathlon Championship Series win. To assist Luis's winning performance, Mike formed a partnership between the squad and Tymewear, a breathing sensor technology company. After his win, which took nearly eight hours of controlled racing in the hot and humid conditions of Kona, Hawaii, world champion Luis credited the VitalPro breathing sensor with being integral to success in both his racing and his training.

Alongside his recent research on leadership in Olympic and Paralympic sports, Mike works with the Girona-based PTC (Plan, Train, Conquer) Squad. His role focuses on developing projects and partnerships for the international group with elite triathletes from Great Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Japan and Mexico, all of whom are aiming for LA 2028 and Ironman titles.

Speaking on his recent projects, Dr Higgins said:

“It’s such a cool way to get involved in elite sport at the highest level. We’re spending time looking at what we can use to improve athlete performance and develop new projects, including nutritional supplementation, data analysis and AI. We’re also exploring a long-term project with Technogym to create a high-performance gym infrastructure in Girona, as the athletes don’t have a Powerbase there.

“When the athletes win medals and championships, I like to think I’ve played a 0.1% part, but hopefully it’s an important 0.1!”
