Dobbing has more than 20 years’ coaching experience and has a proven track record of developing athletes from their first steps in sport through to international championships.
At Loughborough, he will work with athletes, coaches and the wider performance team to build a throws programme where athletes of every ability feel supported, challenged and inspired.
He joins the University from England Athletics, where he currently holds the position of Talent Event Lead for Javelin.
A former competitive javelin thrower himself, Tom is also the Performance Athletics Lead for UK Deaf Sport. In this voluntary role, he develops athletics talent ahead of the 2029 Athens Deaflympics.
As founder of the UK Javelin Throw Association, Tom brings the javelin community together through coach education, collaboration and creating opportunities for young athletes.
Alongside coaching, he served 32 years in the Royal Air Force and retired as a Wing Commander in 2023.
Speaking to Loughborough Sport, Tom said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Loughborough at such an exciting time for sport at the university.
“For me, coaching has always been about more than how far someone can throw. It’s about understanding the individual, helping them believe in what they can achieve, and creating an environment where they can develop and enjoy the journey.
“Loughborough has an incredible sporting heritage, and I’m really excited to build on that legacy by developing more top-class athletes across throws.”
