The exhibition has been curated by Dr Kerri Akiwowo, Senior Lecturer in Textiles (School of Design and Creative Arts) and explores Black identities and embodied experiences through the ages, told through afro hair narratives and artefacts of Black and mixed heritage communities.
The project was launched online during last year’s Black History Month with the theme of ‘Reclaiming Narratives’. There was a call-out for the University community to submit images and personal stories around topics including, ‘Head Coverings’, ‘Eurocentric’, ‘Hairstyles’ and ‘Paraphernalia’. Loughborough University students, doctoral researchers, staff, alumni and professional practitioners all contributed to the exhibition.
‘AFRO HAIR: IS a BIG conversation’ is a nod to the many experiences and observations encountered by Dr Akiwowo over time. Through storytelling and explorations of social history, she weaves her own object narratives with those of other members of the Black and mixed heritage community. It is a space to share, learn and reflect on cultural afro hair practices and communities, highlighting the significance of Black identity through the ages globally.
The exhibition is open on weekdays, 12pm-2pm until 5 November at Martin Hall Exhibition Space.
