Vice Chancellors Scholarships available in four new cross-disciplinary doctoral research clusters

Loughborough University has launched four new cross-disciplinary doctoral research clusters to tackle complex global issues aligned to its institutional strengths.

The clusters – which bring together expertise across many academic disciplines aligned to the strategic themes of Climate Change and Net Zero; Sport, Health and Wellbeing and Vibrant and Inclusive Communities – are:

EcoSENSE
Developing advanced multi-sensing technologies to monitor the health of soil and water systems to help tackle the climate and pollution crisis.

Hybrid 3D Concrete Printing
An interdisciplinary exploration across design, materials and manufacturing to enable hybrid-3D concrete printing to deliver net zero construction.

Inclusive Engineering; People to Products
Developing future leaders in engineering with expertise in EDI practices within engineering research and technology development.

Sports for Climate Action and Nature
A collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach to address the complex, bi-directional relationship between sport and climate and biodiversity action.

Each of the new research clusters has five Vice Chancellor’s Scholarships. Professor Steve Christie, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Doctoral College, said: “These prestigious, fully-funded studentships are an excellent way to nurture talented doctoral research students as well as build capacity in areas that will play an integral part in the delivery of the University’s research and innovation portfolio. I’m looking forward to welcoming the Vice Chancellor’s Scholars into our vibrant research community.”

Professor Dan Parsons, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, added: “Launching the cross-disciplinary doctoral research clusters amounts to an investment of over £2 m in our research and innovation talent development. This will not only attract high-calibre doctoral students but also provide new collaborative opportunities for our academic researchers and valued industry partners. Their work is fully aligned to the University’s vision to create better futures together and will be key to driving our international reputation in addressing a suite of global challenges.”
