Statement of Intent to enable exploration of opportunities in sport and sports leadership

In the presence of His Majesty’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Neil Crompton and Vice Minister of Sport His Excellency Bader Alkadi, Loughborough University has signed a Statement of Intent with the Leaders Development Institute, part of the Ministry of Sport in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This will enable to the exploration of exciting opportunities for research, education and professional development programmes in sport and sports leadership.

The Statement was signed on behalf of Loughborough University by Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Linton, in Riyadh on Monday 4th December with Dr Mezna AlMarzooqi, Director General of the Leaders Development Institute.

His Excellency Vice Minister of Sport Bader Alkadi described this signing as a major and distinguished step:

"As part of Saudi Vision 2030, we have great ambitions for the sports sector to continue its major role in the process of development and growth that the Kingdom is experiencing in all levels. Partnerships such as Loughborough University are considered exciting to help build a workforce in the field of sports that achieves the desired change and excellence for both sides."

Professor Chris Linton, attending the event said, "Sport has the power to transform our world and society for good. Through this partnership we hope that a new generation of sport leaders will be developed to take this challenge forwards.

His Britannic Majesty’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Neil Crompton said:

"As Saudi Arabia continues on its rapid trajectory to deliver Vision 2030, it is wonderful to see the UK as the partner of choice in some of the most exciting sectors, such as sport. Through this partnership we will see the proud sporting and educational institution of Loughborough University working with Saudi partners to support both Kingdoms to progress sports research and professional development for the benefits of both our peoples."

Dr Mezna AlMarzooqi commented:

"Our vision is to empower excellence in the sports sector, with a mission to support the capability development of individuals and organizations in this field. Partnerships like the one we are building with Loughborough University will enhance mutual collaboration for the development of the sports sector in the kingdom."

Loughborough are in the early stages of exploring whether this development can be part of a broader sports partnership between Loughborough University, the world’s top-ranked university for sports-related subjects, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has exciting aspirations for sport and sports development as a clear part of the 2030 Vision. There are a range of considerations relevant to future collaborations within Saudi Arabia which Loughborough is committed to exploring and the institution looks forward to working with those in the region who are proactively driving forward innovation and transformation under Vision2030.
