Celebratory programme of events to be held by Loughborough University for Black History Month

Black History Month is an important event which takes place each year to recognise, celebrate, and honour the contributions and histories of black people across the world and within our communities.

Loughborough University – alongside Loughborough Students’ Union – is delighted to be hosting a diverse event programme throughout the month of October which will feature discussion panels, presentations, research roundtables, creative arts opportunities and reading challenges.

The events are open to both staff and students, and the majority will take place online to comply with health and safety guidelines in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the highlights of this month’s programme will be a special event hosted by UNISON with speaker Carol Leeming MBE FRSA, a poet and playwright from Leicester.

In her talk ‘Black History is My History is Your History’, she will discuss how Black history has shaped the USA, the UK, as well books and TV programmes, schools and higher education. Carol will also delve into the Black history of Loughborough and Leicestershire as well.

The University will be holding a panel event on 14 October with Dr James Esson, Tara Nadi, Fejiro Amam and Richard Taylor. This will be an open and honest conversation sharing experiences, views, and looking to the future.

Throughout the month, there are also plans to publish student vlogs, poetry, interviews and reflective pieces to coincide with the events programme.

A consistent theme within Black History Month is raising awareness about, and finding solutions to address, structural racism. Here at the University, we are continuing to develop a comprehensive action plan to advance race equality at Loughborough.
