Loughborough to hold first ever Talk Sport Student Conference

Loughborough University is to hold its first ever student conference based around starting a career in the sports industry next week.

Staff, alumni, employers and sports-minded students will come together in the James France Exhibition Area on Thursday 1 February for the Talk Sport Student Conference 2018.

The event, which is unique to Loughborough, has evolved from the University’s successful Talk Sport events and is led by the Careers Network.

It aims to provide students career insight, promote employment opportunities and build further links with the sports industry.

Loughborough alumni Ross Edgley, an expert in the fitness industry and the co-founder of sports nutrition company The Protein Works, and Peter Keen CBE, the University’s Director of Sport Advancement, will give keynote presentations at the conference.

There will also be a Q&A panel with leading figures and careers-focused workshops led by industry specialists such as Dr Steve Ingham, Performance Scientist and Director of Supporting Champions, Matt Reeves, Head of Fitness and Conditioning at Leicester City Football Club, and Sam Murphy, Head of Promotions at BT Sport.

Sam Murphy will be joined by Loughborough alumna Jennifer Taylor (JT) who is an example of how beneficial events like this can be.

It was as a result of last years’ Talk Sport event that JT met Sam and secured summer work experience.

The former Loughborough Students’ Union Media Executive Officer went on to impress BT Sport so much that they offered her a full-time position as a Junior Producer within Sam’s team.

JT said: “I don't think I'd be a producer this soon after university if I hadn’t of met Sam. I'm sure I'd still be working in the media industry but in a more entry-level role.

“The Talk Sport Student Conference is amazing for anyone trying to get into any area of the sport industry. It puts so many great industry experts at your fingertips. I’d say it’s definitely worth attending – and who knows what it could lead to!”

The conference – which is open to all students, not just those studying sport-related subjects – includes the hugely successful annual Careers Fair, with employers from across the sports industry such as PepsicoBupa and Decathlon UK.
