International relations and global security expert joins Loughborough University

Professor Caroline Kennedy-Pipe, one of the UK’s leading experts on international relations and global security has joined Loughborough University.

She has taken up the post of Professor of International Relations and International Security in the School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences.

Professor Kennedy-Pipe has interests in the history of the Cold War, counter terrorism policy and new security challenges. Her current research is on contemporary war, with a focus on female suicide bombers, improvised explosive device (IED) trauma and the use of armed drones in counter-insurgency.

She joins Loughborough from the University of Hull, where she was Professor of War Studies and Director of the Marine and Maritime Institute. She has previously been Chair of War Studies at the University of Warwick and was Professor of International Relations at the University of Sheffield. She is a past President of the British International Studies Association, and is currently a First Sea Lord Fellow.

Speaking about her appointment Professor Nick Clifford, Dean of the School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences, said: “It is tremendous to be able to welcome such a high profile academic in this field to Loughborough.

“Her knowledge and research will strengthen and compliment the world leading research already taking place at the University, and will provide additional focus on contemporary issues at an international scale.”

Professor Kennedy-Pipe added: “I’m delighted to be joining Loughborough and look forward to contributing to the academic excellence for which the University is known. And as former netball player and fan, I look forward to watching and supporting the Loughborough Lightning team.”

Professor Kennedy-Pipe has been appointed as part of the University’s Excellence100 campaign. Launched in January 2017, the campaign is aiming to recruit up to 100 outstanding academics across a wide range of disciplines.
