Dr Iro Xenidou-Dervou

I am a Reader in Psychology in Education in the Department of Mathematics Education. I conduct research on learning and instruction with a particular focus on mathematics cognition and education.

I study the factors that influence mathematics performance and learning, such as our thinking skills, the language(s) that we speak as well as our emotions.

Growing up, algebra was one of my favourite topics at school. Now one of my favourite branches of research is looking at how children learn numbers and develop mathematical skills, which is why I chose to hold this wooden board toy. I also study children’s emerging financial literacy skills.

Another aspect of my job that I enjoy is teaching - I teach psychology in education topics as well as statistics. I am committed to communicating to learners of all ages and expertise what we know from research about how we learn, which can help in the progression of all aspects of our lives.
