Dr Ana Salagean holding a red and white object in the shape of a triangle with Pascal's triangle modulo 2 pattern printed onto it.

Professor Ana Salagean

I am a Professor of Cryptography in the Department of Computer Science. The pattern on the object I made is Pascal's triangle modulo 2.

It is also an approximation of a fractal called Sierpinski's triangle. I like this pattern because it illustrates mathematical beauty in an accessible way. Pascal's triangle modulo 2 combines two areas of mathematics that I use in my research: finite fields (here arithmetic modulo 2) and combinatorics (here binomial coefficients).

I study certain mathematical properties of the encryption algorithms that provide secure connections for our everyday online activities.
