Responses to questions regarding the Network:
When did you join the REACH staff network?
2023
What is your favourite thing about the REACH staff network?
What I appreciate most about the REACH Staff Network is the welcoming and supportive environment it provides. It’s a space where I feel safe to speak openly about my racial, cultural, and religious background without fear of judgement or stigma. Before joining, I often felt unsure about how to express these aspects of my identity in the workplace.
The network has given me the confidence to share my experiences and engage in meaningful conversations. I hadn’t realised how important it was to be part of a shared space with people who understand and relate to your journey. That sense of connection has helped me overcome feelings of isolation and has replaced doubt with a stronger sense of self-worth and belonging.
Before I joined the network, I had experiences with colleagues who undermined me because of my race and background. They were openly dismissive of my culture, made assumptions based on negative media portrayals, and expressed opinions that were not only hurtful but reflected a clear lack of awareness and tolerance. At the time, I internalised much of that behaviour, thinking I just had to accept it in silence.
Now, with the support of REACH, I’ve come to understand that those behaviours were rooted in ignorance—not truth. I no longer carry the weight of those experiences in the same way. Instead, I feel empowered to speak up, educate others, and stand firm in the value of my heritage and identity.
Why should people join the REACH staff network?
People should consider joining the REACH Staff Network because it offers far more than a sense of belonging. It’s a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to share, learn, and celebrate cultural identity. It fosters genuine understanding, encourages open dialogue, and helps create a workplace where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Since getting involved, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for cultures beyond my own. The openness and respect within the network have not only expanded my knowledge but also supported my personal and professional growth.
Initially, I joined quite late and assumed it was an exclusive group, something only a few could access or contribute to. I’ve since realised that perception came from a broader lack of awareness about the existence and purpose of Staff Networks like REACH. These spaces are vital—they provide support around complex and sensitive issues, helping to cultivate a healthier, safer and more inclusive workplace.
What I love most is the way REACH brings people together. The energy, celebration, and cultural exchange create an environment rich in connection and mutual respect. Through these shared experiences, I’ve learned so much and developed a deeper sense of community with colleagues I may not have otherwise had the chance to connect with.
Regarding your role at the University:
What is your favourite thing about your role?
As Incubator Operations Officer, I have the privilege of supporting early-stage startups as they bring their ideas to life and work toward building successful businesses. The entrepreneurs I work with are incredibly driven, hardworking, and passionate about what they do—and their determination is genuinely inspiring.
What I enjoy most about my role is being part of an inclusive, collaborative environment where creativity and ambition thrive. I’m constantly meeting new individuals and helping them connect with others who can support and elevate their journey. It’s especially rewarding when I introduce two people—often complete strangers—and see an immediate spark of connection. Watching those relationships grow and knowing they may contribute to someone’s success is a highlight of my work.
Being able to help foster that sense of community and collaboration is something I truly value. It’s not just about managing a space—it’s about creating the right conditions for people to flourish, share knowledge, and feel supported as they pursue their goals
Who is an inspiration for you and why?
I find inspiration in the people I encounter every day. Whether it's a colleague, a friend, or even a stranger, there's always something to learn - be it their resilience, kindness, or the quiet confidence they carry. These qualities often leave a lasting impression and can influence us in ways we don’t immediately realise.
While I do admire some well-known public figures, I prefer to draw inspiration from those around me - people whose words and actions have had a more personal and meaningful impact. It’s easy to overlook how much our everyday interactions shape us, but I believe it's in those ordinary moments that the most authentic inspiration is found.
Truthfully, I find it hard to pinpoint just one person. Everyone has something valuable to offer, and I’ve learned to appreciate the small, powerful ways people demonstrate strength, grace, and integrity in their lives.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!
I absolutely love puzzles! Whether it’s crosswords, jigsaws, or logic games online, they’ve been a constant in my life and one of my favourite pastimes since childhood. Growing up with health challenges that limited my physical activity and social interaction, puzzles became both a comfort and a companion.
They’ve taught me patience and focus - qualities that I carry with me today. I’m known for staying calm under pressure and rarely getting flustered, which I credit to countless hours spent immersed in solving puzzles.
