The rising threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) demands innovative alternatives to traditional broad-spectrum antibiotics. Bacteriophages, nature's bacterial predators, offer a promising solution for both human and veterinary medicine.
Professor Malik’s Inaugural Lecture explores the translational journey of emerging phage therapeutics from laboratory discovery to regulated, approved medicines.
Spotlighting cutting-edge research in bioprocess engineering, he will examine how stirred-tank bioreactors and high-throughput scale-down models are used to optimise upstream production yields.
He will also discuss the use of scalable downstream purification strategies to remove impurities, as well as advanced formulation and delivery technologies, including controlled-release micro- and nano- capsules.Finally, he will showcase real-world interdisciplinary applications, demonstrating how bacteriophages can be delivered via nebulisation to treat human respiratory infections and integrated into food production systems.
