The Hydrogen Works
Hydrogen offers the scope to deliver energy security, acceleration to Net Zero and reduce Britain’s productivity gap.
The Government’s Hydrogen Strategy outlines bold ambitions: to achieve 10GW hydrogen by 2030, half of it being green, which could meet around 20-35% of Britain’s energy demand.
The Hydrogen Works is a strategic consortium led by Loughborough University to drive hydrogen skills, innovation and productivity to create a hydrogen superpower in the East Midlands.
We are doing this by
Bringing academic experts and industry partners together to deliver cutting-edge hydrogen research and innovation at the University’s state-of-the-art facilities.
Supporting future leaders of the hydrogen economy by leading the UK’s only Centre for Doctoral Training focused on Engineering Hydrogen Net Zero.
Providing a skills exchange at the East Midlands Institue of Technology, degree level, doctoral and postdoctoral programmes.
Creating a £40M expansion of Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park to co-locate a skills ecosystem, incubation and manufacturing, research and innovation.
Investment progress
Together with industry, universities, colleges and skills providers, economic development and policy partners we are building a compelling case for investment in the East Midlands.
In December 2023 East Midlands Freeport announced seed capital funding for Phase 1 of The East Midlands Zero Carbon Innovation Centre, a joint initiative between the Freeport, Loughborough University and University of Nottingham to focus on hydrogen, manufacturing and electrification for power and propulsion.
