Support
Support is a vital part of how the University addresses harassment and sexual misconduct. No one, whether student or staff, should have to navigate these situations alone. In line with the OfS E6 Regulation, dedicated support services are available to listen, help you to understand your options, and offer both practical and emotional support. Knowing where to go and what help is available can make a meaningful difference. Our aim is to ensure that every member of our community feels heard, respected and supported.
What support is available?
There is a variety of support here within the university for both staff and students. We have a dedicated team of advisers who work alongside students to help with advice and support, and they will tailor the ongoing support around a holistic assessment of your needs.
HR offers advice to staff and provide an Employer Assistance package (also accessible to Doctoral Researchers) and our Occupational Health team are dedicated to providing work-based assessments based on your current circumstances.
What’s the difference between support the university offers and the support from other agencies?
The University offers support within student services from specialist advisors with previous qualifications and experience in issues relating to harassment, sexual violence, and abuse. Our advisors provide holistic emotional and practical support on a 1-1, individualised basis which (where appropriate) can include the implementation of reasonable adjustments and working closely alongside academic schools and University departments to support students throughout their study or take a LOA if needed. Students and staff can be referred to local specialist services. When supporting students, our advisors work alongside local agencies such as are the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Living Without Abuse, FREEVA, Rape Crisis and local NHS mental health services, to provide holistic, collaborative support.
Staff can access support through our Employee Assistance Provider or via their GP who may refer them to specialist services for example, forensic medical examinations, therapy for Post Traumatic Stress and/or medical advice from NHS doctors and nurses that the University (as an education provider) does not provide.
There is support available for staff via the local services listed above and also via the Employee Assistance Provider.
What support is available or signposted to and appropriate for people from diverse communities?
The University understands that everyone has different needs when accessing support, particularly those with protected characteristics. We will adjust our support to meet individual need including access requirements and cultural needs.
