Professional Certificate Programme for Sports Agents

Loughborough University's new Professional Certificate Programme for Sports Agents is designed to meet the need for a comprehensive industry qualification that covers sports law, governance and business practices - drawing on Loughborough's unique connections to the world of sport.

By maintaining high standards within the profession, existing problems associated with poor practice will be addressed – protecting and enhancing the positive image of the game and its professionals.

This unique programme – endorsed by the UK Association of Football Agents – is ideal for registered sports agents and anyone wishing to move into this sector.

It will provide you with the breadth of knowledge and capabilities required to operate lawfully – and in a principled manner – within the player and transfer markets.

Combining lectures and seminars, the programme makes use of practical activities and discussions to support and embed learning. 

The broad course content and wide-ranging expertise of our programme team makes Loughborough University's Professional Certificate Programme for Sports Agents suitable for agents (or aspiring agents) working across sports.

Programme details

10 week programme

There are two cohorts per year, each running for 10 weeks and delivered at Loughborough London campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London on Thursday evenings at 6:30-9:00pm.

Autumn cohort: 3rd October - 5th December 2019

Winter cohort: 30th January - 2nd April 2020

Weekend programme

This cohort will be delivered over 2½ weekends at Loughborough University in Loughborough on:

1st & 2nd February 2020

29th & 1st March 2020

4th April 2020

The same programme content will be covered as the ten-week programme with lunch provided on all teaching days and dinner with networking opportunities on Saturday evenings on 5th October and 2nd November.

Each session will begin with a tutor-led theory session followed by hands-on case study activities.

The course will focus on the three core pillars of the agency profession and market:

Regulatory frameworks

You will study the legal frameworks governing agents in different sports and how to comply with them.

Contemporary legal issues

You will explore a range of issues – including player representation, dealing with minors, financial crime and corruption, betting and match-fixing – and how to deal with them.

Business practices

You will investigate the practicalities of being an agent including transfer negotiations, approaching clubs, and expanding your network.

  • Session 2: Contracts: Representation and Employment Contracts 
  • Session 3: Contracts: Employment Contracts and Commercial Contracts
  • Session 4: Complying with Regulations: Representing Minors
  • Session 5: Complying with Regulations: Corruption and the Agent Market
  • Session 6: Talent ID: Working with Talent
  • Session 7: Dispute Resolution in Sport
  • Session 8: Managing Athletes' Parents
  • Session 9: Negotiating Transfers
  • Session 10: How to Succeed in the Agent Market
