Dr Miguel Pans Castillo

PhD, MEng

  • Research Associate

Background

Miguel was awarded with an Integrated Master's degree (MEng) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Valencia, Spain, in 2006 and with a PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, in 2014.

He carried out his PhD research at the department of Energy and Environment of the Instituto de Carboquímica ICB-CSIC (Zaragoza, Spain) under the supervision of Prof Juan Adánez Elorza, which focused on hydrogen production with CO2 capture by steam reforming of CH4 coupled with a Chemical-Looping Combustion system (SR-CLC). The highlights of his PhD research include the development of a suitable and highly-reactive Fe-based oxygen carriers (both natural and synthetic) for CLC using gaseous fuels (CH4, H2, CO) and the determination the autothermal operating conditions for optimal H2 production when firing CH4 in a SR-CLC process.

After his PhD, Miguel worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Low Carbon Energy and Resources Technologies Research Group at the University of Nottingham, led by Professor Hao Liu, from 2015 to 2018. At Nottingham he performed research on biomass combustion in fluidized bed systems, studying the effect of different operational parameters, such as i) the use of air staging, ii) combustion atmosphere (air and oxy-fuel), iii) bed temperature and iv) the use of additives (added on both reactor’s bed and fuels), on the fluidisation behaviour of the bed material, gas emissions and combustion efficiency.
