Department of Materials

Postgraduate research

The department prides itself on its high level of research activity and we have a thriving community of research students, who benefit from the considerable experience of our staff. Students studying for a postgraduate research degree in Materials work on projects of real-world significance, many of which feed into improvements in life for everyone.

There are outstanding opportunities for study leading to the research degrees of MPhil, PhD and EngD.

  • MPhil – An MPhil degree usually requires two years of full-time study and is examined by the submission of a thesis and a viva voce.
  • PhD – A PhD degree usually requires three years of full-time study and is examined by submission of a thesis and a viva voce.
  • EngD – The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is a four year programme and is a different route to a postgraduate research qualification, with about 3 years spent conducting research in industry.

In addition to the full-time options above, prospective students who would like to undertake research study on a part-time basis e.g. those already working in industry are also very welcome to apply.
