Ian has spent over 30 years working in the construction industry working in a variety of roles across the whole value chain and multiple sectors. Having originally trained as a civil engineer, his work evolved into a focus on sustainability in the early 2000’s whilst working at Anglian Water.
After leaving Anglian Water, Ian worked as a sustainability consultant and been involved in a range of industry-leading initiatives and roles, these include: CEEQUAL (now BREEAM Infrastructure), the world-leading sustainability rating scheme for infrastructure projects, where he was Technical Director for 15 years before then leading its integration into the wider BREEAM family of schemes at BRE; he was a founding partner for the Supply Chain Sustainability School; and Delivery Lead for the development Value Toolkit in the Construction Innovation Hub. Through his wider consultancy work he has experience in sustainability measurement and data verification, management systems, carbon/GHG inventories and life cycle analysis, circular economy and responsible/ethical sourcing.
Ian is now a Senior Sustainability Leader and Decarbonisation Lead for Stantec UK and Ireland where he is responsible for leading sustainability advisory projects for water industry clients and beyond.
He is a Chartered Environmentalist, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and Fellow of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals. He has a Bachelors degree in Water and Environmental Management, from De Montfort University, and a Masters in Responsibility and Business Practice from the University of Bath.
