Gordon has a degree in Civil and Structural Engineering from the University of Aberdeen and is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager with 50 years’ experience in water supply engineering.
For the most recent 20 years, Gordon has been an Associate with Buro Happold Limited as the company’s Specialist in the design of Water Supply Networks and Pressure Pipelines; hydraulic modelling and surge analysis, leading project teams and providing expert design guidance and conducting project design reviews.
He had a key role in the master-planning, appraisal and design of water networks for projects across 13 countries, including the Middle East, Poland, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia, plus numerous UK projects. This extensive portfolio includes globally significant projects such as Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City, a major new residential development in Kuwait, and notable UK projects such as the 2012 Olympics and Legacy water/irrigation network design.
In previous Visiting Lecturer/Professor roles, Gordon has also successfully delivered and improved BEng, MSc and MEng water/wastewater engineering modules at the University of Bristol, University of Bath and Brunel University London. This included preparation/delivery of lectures, exam setting/marking and assessment of Design Assignments. Gordon is also a Professional Reviewer for CIWEM and CIBSE.
As a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at Loughborough University (2025-2028), Gordon’s role is co-leading the project “Design reviewing for quality management in engineering problem-based learning”. The key objectives are to enhance learning, provide guidance/reviews of design assignments and improve students’ practical skills and employability, aligned with professional institution’s membership requirements.
