About the University

International Partnerships

Loughborough University collaborates with a range of international organisations to cultivate educational and research opportunities which are mutually beneficial.

Our global network includes internationally-renowned academic institutions as well as prestigious public bodies. Our international partnerships contribute directly to the University’s core strands of activity: teaching; research; enterprise; and sport. Some of our long-standing and new partnerships are mentioned below.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

There are numerous synergies between Loughborough University and MIT, particularly in the areas of Engineering and Sport, for which both institutions have world-leading reputations. Each year MIT students visit Loughborough to spend time in our Sport Technology Institute as part of their degree programmes in engineering and a proportion of these students return to do vacation project work with our academic staff. Loughborough University is now a key partner in the MIT Regional Entrepreneur Accelerator Programme (REAP) and we are currently discussing expanding our partnership into enterprise and innovation at our new Loughborough University London site. On the sporting front, Loughborough University proudly hosted the first MIT-Loughborough lacrosse match at our professional-standard stadium on campus during 2015.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

Our principal link with NTU is through the Institute for Sports Research (ISR), a Singapore-based international collaboration between NTU and Loughborough, created in July 2011 with the support of the Economic Development Board (EDB). The success of this partnership is hoped to pave the way for further collaboration, namely between NTU’s new Medical School and the UK’s new National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, which is based on the Loughborough campus. Furthermore, Singapore’s National Institute of Education (NIE), affiliated to and based on the NTU campus, has a particularly large number of Loughborough alumni amongst its faculty members.

UNITECH International

Loughborough University is a member of the UNITECH International academic network – an association of leading European engineering universities. UNITECH International Society is a non-profit organisation based in Zurich. The UNITECH goal, together with leading European universities and multinational companies, is to prepare top engineering students for the global business challenges of tomorrow. The core of the UNITECH programme is to enable engineering students to spend at least one semester at a university abroad in a foreign language area, to undertake a placement with insight into management and multicultural awareness, and to participate in professional coaching and training. Besides Loughborough, the academic network of UNITECH comprises Chalmers University (Sweden), Institut National Des Sciences Appliques Lyon (France), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), ETH Zürich (Switzerland), RWTH Aachen (Germany) and Delft University of Technology (TU Delf, The Netherlands). Amongst the corporate partners are Bühler, Caterpillar, Evonik Industries and Vodafone.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD)

We have longstanding ties with IITD, dating back to the mid-1970s. Loughborough University assisted IITD to develop areas of the national training syllabus for Indian engineers and continues to collaborate with IITD in the fields of mechanical engineering, electronic, electrical and systems engineering, and aeronautical and automotive engineering. There have been a number of successful joint research projects over the years which have been awarded funding from the Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST), the European Commission and the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). In November 2014 Loughborough University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison, visited IITD to strengthen engagement and renew the Memorandum of Understanding.
